The Village of Pinecrest was incorporated in 1996. One of the areas first focal points which attracted both tourist and new residents was the Parrot Jungle which was opened by Franz Scherr in 1936. His idea of allowing birds to fly free became exceptionally popular over time and now houses 1,100 tropical birds and 2,000 different plants and flowers. Pinecrest purchased Parrot Jungle's 20 acres in 2002 to build Pinecrest Gardens. Parrot Jungle relocated to Watson Island and has changed its name to Jungle Island.
The area thrived in the 50's and 60's. Arial photos taken in 1951 (here) and 1968 (here) illustrate the rapid growth from fruit groves to ranch-style homes. The Village of Pinecrest is well known in Miami for its thriving landscape and acre lots. Since being incorporated, the village has focused on supplying superior police, parks and recreation, services, and public works to its residents.
